Chapter 4: Daily Quest

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN HALF-BLOOD!”, Rex screamed in frustration.

He has a deep hatred towards the supernatural so naturally, he doesn’t like one bit of the Race section.

He tried thinking of changing his race but failed miserably, The Race section didn’t even budge on the contrary it even glistens with a silver hue as if it’s mocking Rex.

It makes his blood boil but he immediately calms himself down when he heard a knocking on the door.

A middle-aged woman with long brown hair gracefully enters the room, she wears glasses with black outlines, her strict expression gives off a vibe of a scholar. She is Rex’s guardian, Ms. Greene.

Rex watches with a sense of relief as Ms.Greene runs to him intending to hug him.

‘I thought I can’t ever see mom again, but thankfully I can survive that incident’ Rex thought, thanking the gods that he survived.

“My sweet boy, I thought I will lose you. I can’t sleep for weeks waiting for you, but when I hear news about you, you…already in the hospital hanging onto life” Ms.Greene weep in tears, one can see the sadness she felt just by looking at her teary eyes.

Rex hugs her back, the warmth Ms.Greene brings is incomparable to anything in the world for Rex. She touches Rex everywhere checking if he’s still hurt somewhere, but thankfully she found none and sighs a breath of relief.

“I’m back mom,” said Rex trying hard not to cry.

With that, Rex and Ms.Greene engage in a motherly-son conversation.

In the midst of conversation, Rex zoned out. ‘Who is the one who saved me? Is it the God? or the Devil?’, He remembered that he begs God and Devil at the same time, so Rex decided he will ask this game that he got about it.

After a while, Ms.Greene said, “Two days ago, when I’m at the ceremony they gave you a medal and also a huge amount of money for me. They told me that it’s gratitude for your bravery from the United World Organizations, How could they! hmph” although she’s complaining about that, her smiles cannot hide the happiness she felt.

It’s always been like this, Ms.Greene is from a lower-class family they don’t have an awakened so naturally, they lack money. Every time Rex is having a part-time job, she always asks how much they pay, when do the payroll comes in, she even left her husband because of another guy who has more money nevertheless Rex still loves her and doesn’t mind her bad side.

After having a long chat, Ms.Greene decided to leave because of some matters to attend to.

But before she closes the door, she pops her head back in, “Oh yeah, You will attend university after your discharge from the hospital. There is a new university made by the government for Awakened and Military units, although you will be older than most of the kids there” she said while scrolling on her phone, probably reading an email from the government.

Then she continues, “They said to relax in the university as they will help to nurture you. Oh, I almost forgot I brought your phone, I’m going now bye! I’ll come back tonight” Ms.Greene puts the phone on the desk beside Rex and left.

Rex was stunned, ‘Me? Go to a university? I don’t know why but I’m excited and look forward to it’

He takes his phone and checks on it, just like the usual kids he can’t get far from his phone. Even in the military he still sneakily play with his phone.

He checks his messages only to find three notifications there, it’s from his childhood friend Laura Frostbrand, his military platoon leader, and one from Edward.

First, he opens the messages from Laura.

The content of the messages is short and clear, she said, “I heard you survived, that’s good”

Rex is disappointed, Truthfully he likes Laura since he was little. When his parents died, Laura is always there for him to cheer him up but all of that change when Laura started to grow up. She started to distance herself from Rex, He never knew what the reason was but after a long time it becomes like this.

He thought that Laura will at least visit him but reality prove him wrong, a simple message is all he can get after going through the veil of life and death.

His platoon leader says that he is proud of him, while Edward’s message is telling him that he will visit but it is from five days ago.

After reading his messages, Rex then calls out the game by thinking ‘Notification’, in an instant the same hologram appears.

He tries to find a help button in the hologram screen but there is nothing else except for <notifcation>, <stat>, <skill>, , and <shop>.</shop></inventory></skill></stat></notifcation>

Getting frustrated, Rex wanted to close the screen when suddenly a notification appears.

Rex is more sure that this is just a new generation of games that are made, but just to make sure he asks all the questions he has in mind.

‘So, Are you the one who saved me?’ asks Rex inside his head.

‘If that is so, are you the God? or the Devil?’

Rex thinks with a doubtful expression, ‘Hmm, that’s what a God or Devil will say. So what is your purpose?’

‘That’s pretty much what a devil would say, In that case, what do I have to pay for all of this?’

‘That’s a Devil for you’

Just when Rex about to ask another question a ding sound was heard inside his head.

Rex read the quest and felt that it was a joke, ‘the Lunar’s blessing? You mean I have to sit under the moon for three hours? Not happening’

He decided to ignore it, ‘What the heck? This game is dumb, what kind of game tells the player to sit under the moon? and also this hospital doesn’t even have a rooftop, the best thing I can do is probably stick my head out of the window but that’s just stupid if I have to stay in that position for hours’

The more Rex thinks about it, the angrier he got.

He finally closes the <stat> tabs and opens the <skill> tab,</skill></stat>

Rex reaches out his hand and taps on the Night Sight skills, the touch went through the hologram.

‘I forgot that it’s not touch screen’ he curses himself for forgetting before he taps the Night Sight skills, but this time he’s using his mind.

‘Pretty self-explanatory’ Rex thought, then he taps on the Creature of the Night.

‘That’s more interesting, so basically, I’m stronger at night? Well that’s too good to be true’

He closes the system and decided to sleep, although he is fully healed he still felt the fatigue he felt from the operation before.

‘As if I will believe all this nonsense. Woah, now that I think about it this bed and pillows are squishy as hell’ Rex thought while rubbing his face on the pillows happily before his eyelids started to get heavy and eventually closes.

Unknown to Rex, the decision to ignore the game will be a decision he will regret.
