“Open up!” The shouts and bangs reverberated through the night, coming from up.
A small group stood in the circle, the whole room submerged in absolute darkness.
They were all in absolute silence, the gloomy atmosphere in the room so dense that it was hard to breathe. They just stood there staring at small glass-like balls in their hands.
“This is the last warning!” They knew they would be caught, as there was no way for them to escape from the heart of dragon territory.
They couldn’t even run away as the monsters, with senses far superior to those of humans, sniffed them out like dogs.
However, none of them looked sad or angry. It was their choice to sacrifice their lives for the higher cause, ‘Hopefully, this will give our brothers and sisters time to finish our missive.’
A loud bang followed by a cracking sound came from the room above them.
“We will meet in the afterlife, my friends.” The old man with graying hair threw the ball into his mouth and swallowed it, the rest following in a rush as multiple sets of heavy steps descended the staircase.
The time slowly ticked by, the steps getting closer, and the world around them slowly losing its color as the poison from their stomach spread through their bodies.
“Let’s meet in the afterlife, brothers!” His comrade, just a young boy in his late teens, dropped a vial filled to the brim with a liquid.
The steps almost reached them, the multiple sets of glowing golden eyes shining in the darkness.
However, he wasn’t scared as his life was already sealed from the moment he took the poison, knowing it was better than whatever awaited him if he got captured.
Finally, the vial smashed against the cold stone floor and shattered. The thick blue liquid leaked out of it and blazed up in glowing blue flames.
The flames instantly spread and engulfed the basement, their blue flickering light revealing the shocked monsters on the staircase.
He felt nothing as the poison in his veins disintegrated his nerves and brain. The world around him turned numb and dull as the flames devoured his flash at an astonishing speed. Finally, his vision faded.
POV Tanya:
Tanya stood in front of an unassuming inn, impatiently waiting.
“Do not let them escape…” The whole tavern exploded right before her eyes, with burning pieces of wood and shattered bricks from the walls launching into the air. The blue ball of flames engulfed everything in its path.
She watched in shock, the flames before, the heat comfortably washing over her body, heating the stone around her.
“This… They…” She lost her words in a fury. The people and perpetrators she searched for died, taking what they knew to their graves.
The next moment, one explosion after another reverberated through the night, columns of blue flames exploding all over the city, her eyes wide as she watched it.
‘How many of them got here?!’ This was far beyond what she expected. The whole town was infested with them.
They all waited for the lapse in the dragon’s guard, waiting for a single night when they could throw away their masks and start their mad plan.
She stood next to the burning tavern in the middle of the night, and one explosion after another echoed, blue flames exploding in every direction.
‘Where are you?’ She looked pleadingly at the clear night sky, hoping and praying that her master would show up and save the day.
POV ???:
Everything was quiet, and the streets were vacated and submerged in the night’s dark embrace. Stars and the moon dimly shone in calming silvery light on the clear night sky.
“Ahhh!” A high-pitched female shriek pierced through the night as an explosion flashed on the city horizon.
‘Rest in peace. We will finish our task.’
A shadow silently ran through the nighttime city, looking like a black blur. She was fast, jumping from one roof to another.
“Die, traitors of humankind!” She dropped a bottle down the chimney and jumped on another roof.
A wave of heat seared her back, and flames exploded out, sending stone rubble flying in all directions and raining down upon the street below her. She felt the heat and raw force of the explosion on her back, making her heart pound with thrill and adrenaline.
‘This is it, burn, you traitors!’ She felt hatred deep within her heart as she remembered her family getting murdered by monsters when she was just a child, ‘And now these traitors are celebrating with them, drinking and eating behind the same table. They have betrayed our ancestors who died fighting dragons and other monsters.’
Another explosion shook the town, and a ball of blue flames rose on the horizon, the blue flames rising high above the city’s skyline.
‘This is not enough!’
Doors of the inns and taverns were opening, and people flooded the street, all pointing and shouting at the burning houses.
“What is going on?”
“Is it another attack?”
With a single move, she jumped down, a short, curved blade glinting under the starlight. She landed straight into a small group of people, her heart beating with joy and adrenaline.
She saw their eyes and faces from close. They were filled with fear and confusion.
‘This is my night! My night of vengeance and, at the same time, my last night!’
Her dagger swished through the darkness, cutting through the neck of the closest man.
He couldn’t even react before the blade slit his neck, his eyes going wide.
Blood spurted out, the geyser of red liquid showering her and soaking her black mantle.
His young face twisted in shock and terror, his eyes losing their light as blood gushed through his mouth, drowning him with his own blood.
“Murde…” Her blade cut again, her body moving and dancing between the humans with the elegance of a dancer.
Her blade was cutting and stabbing again and again. The world around her was blurry. The wind and humans were loudly screaming around her as she moved down the street, with humans falling dead in her tracks.
She paused, watching in fascination as the blood flowed down the dark, stone road. The still twitching bodies spread through the streets, the thick red liquid pooling under them.
The heavy steps and clanging of armor were coming from all directions, the glowing eyes running straight towards her, the blades of their polearms glowing in dim, neon-red light.
‘No, this is not enough! The dragon needs to turn berserk! Hopefully, the other will fare better.’𝑶𝑣𝗅xt.𝒸𝔬𝐦
Orbs of yellow flame shot towards her from both ends of the street, leaving flaming trails in the air behind. They beautifully shone, glowing in the night like small, yellow comets.
She saw no way out as the orbs moved too fast to avoid, and even if she avoided them, the monsters would catch her and tear her limb from limb.
She fell on her knees and crushed the capsule in her mouth, preparing for death, thinking, ‘Now I have paid my debt. My only regret is that I couldn’t kill more of these bastards.’
The next moment, flames engulfed her, turning her body into ash as the volley of fireballs bombarded her from two directions.
