Some even have to use the method of "degrading" Xie Zhiyao in order to highlight and shape the protagonist.
This is a relatively common way of writing. But I remember there was a more clever one, which made Xie Zhiyao a female, thus effectively avoiding the relationship between Xie Zhiyao and Xu Hongdou. From a writing perspective, I find it quite interesting, just like in "Two Thousand Years of Poor Ghost", where the male protagonist travels through time and space into the body of a woman, which avoids the problem that the protagonist would encounter if he were to live forever: love between men and women. Because the protagonist has a male soul, she cannot have feelings for men. And because she has a female body, she cannot have sex with women, so she can only live alone forever.
