[Inheritance Skill: Tome of Maerwyth]

There was text in front of me, and when I saw the number, it lit up on my face.

Lv. 40, I had reached level 40.

Gasp!

I was looking at it with burning eyes when my gaze fell on the last skill.

Immediately, a loud gasp came out of my mouth.

I should have noticed the moment I saw the text, but the skill didn’t have any presence. Every skill has a presence, but not this one.

It makes it very hard for others to notice it, nearly impossible. It is why I didn’t even notice the green color (Underline) of the skill.

I looked at it, and tears started streaming down my face, and I began to cry hard.

It took me a minute to calm down and examine the skill.

The only one that matters.

I am called Caena Aris, but that’s not my name. My true name is Arlithe Maerwyth of the Maerwyth Forest—I am from one of the oldest bloodlines of the world.

The Tome of Maerwyth is our greatest skill. It contains all the knowledge from time immemorial.

It is why it has made countless witches mad; the latest one being my Grandmother. She was a very powerful Grand Witch.

Grand mages used to shudder going against her.

Tome of Maerwyth is a blessing and a curse. It is the first inheritance skill we receive, although it occurs at Lv. 50. Both my mother and Grandmother had gotten it at Lv. 50.

It is extremely rare to get it at Lv. 40.

I didn’t think I would even get it at Lv. 50. It requires a deep understanding of Maerwyth Witchcraft. I didn’t have that, I only understood the basics.

Every spell I created is from scrapping together the basics, including the grand spells.

I activated the skill, and a moment later, the tome appeared in front of me. It’s a green tome with purple edges.

On the cover, a beautiful design of a forest bathing in moonlight is featured.

As I saw this, the rage couldn’t help but burn in my eyes.

‘They will pay for this; I will not die till I burn all of them to ashes,’ I vowed once more.

This tome is a step toward that goal, the biggest one.

It looked about the same as my mother’s, but hers had blue edges, mine had purple. I looked at it for another minute before turning the page.

Immediately, the information came to mind.

I could now find any knowledge I want. The ones I know, the ones I didn’t, but extreme caution is necessary.

My mother used to say, Studying this tome is like walking on a sharp blade. A slight mistake and it will split one into two.

So, I turned the page, and immediately, the text appeared, along with the spell diagrams, drawings, and realistic pictures, along with the memories.

All of it came at once, but it didn’t feel chaotic. It is in its own order.

I read through the page and then another, and another, and I kept reading, forgetting everything else except the enthralling knowledge in front of me.

“Caena!”

I was reading it when someone called my name with a voice filled with aura, breaking me out of my thoughts.

I stopped and turned, only to see Bell standing beside me, looking at the tome in my hand.

“When did you arrive?” I asked. “A few minutes ago. I had been calling you non-stop,” she replied, looking worried, while I shuddered.

‘This tome.’ I thought, looking at it. I threw caution to the wind the moment I got it.

“Is that what I think it is?” she asked with her eyes filled with caution. “Yes,” I replied.

“I thought only those of Lv. 50 get it,” she replied. “Lv. 40, also get it on rare occasion,” I replied, looking at the tome.

“That thing brought fortune and calamity to your family. You should be careful of it,” she said with her voice filled with warning.

“I should,” I nodded, agreeing with it.

“For a while, till I become sure of myself. I should only read it in the company of someone,” I added. “That would be wise,” she replied.

“By the way, congratulations. You have taken a step into becoming a true powerhouse,” she congratulated.

“It is hard to believe,” I said. Still, not fully believing that I had reached Lv. 40.

“You should. The spell you had created was complex. Without you, we couldn’t have gotten the core, much less the artifact,” Bell replied. To that, I smiled.

A moment later, my expression became serious.

“How long did I sleep?” I asked. “Over a day. It is near midnight of the next day,” she replied to my surprise.

Yesterday, after we finished. Remus and five immediately fell into unconsciousness. I remained awake for a while to talk to the madams and reassure them before going to sleep.

Bell didn’t. She was tired, but not enough to need to sleep immediately.

“They didn’t wake up?” I asked. To that, she shook her head. I had expected it, which is why I was looking into the spirit healing spells in the tome.

Once more, I shuddered. I know very well what happened to my Grandmother. She was one of the reasons for our downfall.

I have to be very careful when dealing with that tome.

“Let’s go,” I said, and the first place I went to was Remus’s room.

He is sleeping so deeply that he wouldn’t wake even if someone buried the knife in his heart.

I walked closer to him, before placing my hand on his temple and activating my skill, Witchsight.

It is a new skill and a very powerful one. My mother had it, and a few of my aunts also had it.

As I activated the skill, the world turned colorful, but I focused on Remus and looked at the colors swirling within him.

I had to focus really hard to see the colours clearly. He is a master of the legacy. It protects him, even when the skill is powerful, even among Lv. 40.

Not to mention, I have authority here, but it cannot be compared to that of a master.

Soon, the colors became clear, and a few seconds after that, I heaved a sigh of relief.

“He is good. He should wake up in two to three days,” I said as I got up. “Your prepared charm helped a lot, or it would have been longer,” replied Bell.

Knowing what had happened last time when the Velvet Garden swallowed Mok’s core, I had prepared charms to deal with the spirit strain.

I checked out Carla and others, who are in better condition than Remus. Especially, Carla, she should be able to wake up by tomorrow morning.

Ina will be in the evening, while Margaux and the two others might take midnight or the morning after.

Click!

The door opened, and I walked inside to look at another person. She isn’t the one who participated in the spell, but she fought a battle of her own.

“With that tome, I think you will be able to heal her on your own,” said Bell, looking at General Azalia, who still has the artifact in her hands.

“It won’t be a problem,” I replied with confidence.

It’s not the level that gave me the confidence, but the tome, as she had mentioned. I may have the levels, but my knowledge of witchcraft is worse than that of an average Maerwyth Witch.

The tome will give me the knowledge that will make me a true Maerwyth Witch.

With this in my hand, I have complete confidence to heal her. With the knowledge in this tome, I would have been able to heal her, even if I were just a High-Witch.

I already have an idea of how to do it based on the limited reading I’ve done. It’s not that hard either.

I checked her with the Witchsight, which showed the true extent of the damage. It was greater than I thought, but it turned out my methods had been working better than I had expected.

They wouldn’t have been able to heal her, but they would have stabilised her enough to send her to the healer in the merchant state.

“By the way, I had called Architect Angestel. You will be meeting him tomorrow morning,” she informed, confusing me.

“Why?” I asked. “For the bathhouse,” she replied. For a moment, I didn’t understand, before my eyes lit up.

“Good,” I said.

I hope Carla will wake up in time for the meeting. It’s a big decision, and we should wait for Remus to wake up, but he’ll like things to be ready when he wakes up.

“Also, you should contact Chief Robin; he had asked me to inform him as soon as you woke up,” she informed.

Yes, I should have contacted him the moment I woke up.

Remus has left him in charge, I am sure, he wants the update about his boss.

I immediately sent the message before parting with Bell, as I had sent another message. A few minutes later, I was in a conference room with all the higher-ups of the Velvet Garden.

The meeting lasted for over half an hour before I returned to my office, where Chief Robin was waiting for me.

“How is Lord Silver?” he asked, before I could even greet him. “He will wake up in two to three days,” I replied, before sitting on my chair.

Hearing that, the man sighed.

“I am getting bombarded with calls from Dorus. They are demanding their artifact back, which is now technically ours,” He said.

He had read the contract. It is clearly written in such language that they wouldn’t be able to argue for its ownership.

“It is ours. We got it fairly,” I replied, but the man instead massaged his head.

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter,” he said to himself, before turning to me.

“I had told them as much, but I believe they might try to create some trouble. This is no average artifact.” He added. I nodded at that.

“It’s likely, but they won’t. At least not this soon. They will wait until the synod forgets this matter,” I replied, and he nodded at that.

He stayed for a few minutes more before leaving, having looked at his boss.

I watched him leave and wanted to return to my office to open the tome. Instead, I activated Resplendent Madam and went to make the rounds.

…

Herald Continent

“Ahh!”

Somewhere in the herald continent, a woman woke up with a gasp and shock in her eyes, but more than that, there was joy.

“What happened?” asked the man as he woke up and looked around, alert.

The woman didn’t reply. Instead, looked ahead at the green tome that appeared in front of her.

“She is alive, and she has gained the tome,” she said after a minute of silence. The man realised who they were talking about, and a shock appeared in her eyes.

“How can she gain the tome? She was a child when she escaped. Didn’t you say the levels aren’t enough? One also needs the knowledge of Maerwyth to gain the tome?” asked the man.

To that, the woman laughed.

“Of course, she has the knowledge. I started her on the path to Maerwyth, before she could even speak,” she replied, looking at the pride.

“Are you sure, it is her?” asked the man with hope, building in his eyes.

For years, they have been chasing the leads desperately, and every time, it has resulted in failure, leaving him without hope again.

“It is, there is no one other than our daughter who could gain the tome and gain it at Lv. 40,” she replied with eyes filled with belief.

“Can we find her?” the man asked, his voice filled with hope, but the woman sighed.

“The tome protects Maerwyth witches even from each other, but don’t worry.”

“Now that she has the tome, nobody could stop us from uniting with her,” she replied and lay down on the bed with joy and relief for the first time in over a decade.
